Each year, the NGO ‘Initiatives for Peace and Human Rights’ (iPeace) organizes a training program and moot court competition in international humanitarian law and human rights in the Great Lakes region.
Janson associate assists at African Law Moot Court

During its 6th edition, held from 8 to 15 December 2018 in Rwanda, Olivia Vansteelant, associate of our law firm was part of the delegation of professors, researchers and attorneys from Central African countries, Switzerland, Canada, France, the Netherlands and Belgium.

The program kicked off with an international conference on the 70th year anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was proclaimed on 10 December 1948.

Followed by the moot court competition, 60 talented law students of 30 universities from Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, DR Congo, Tanzania and Rwanda challenged their legal knowledge and public speaking skills in pleading a fictitious case regarding child soldiers during armed conflicts, inspired by those experienced in the Great Lakes region since the 1990s.

The mission of iPeace, founded in 2001, is to help communities in Africa's Great Lakes region achieve sustainable peace by supporting and promoting human rights education.

iPeace has independently registered organizations in Burundi, DR Congo, Rwanda and the Netherlands which closely collaborate to achieve their shared mission.
