    Pressure to reduce crude protein levels in pig diets has been building for years. Stricter environmental regulation, rising raw material costs and a growing understanding of gut health all point in the same direction. But how far can this go without compromising technical performance?

     

    Why reduce crude protein?

    Excess protein not used for growth or production is excreted by the pig. This increases the nitrogen load on the environment and contributes to ammonia emissions in the barn. In addition, an excess of protein in the digestive tract can create a favourable environment for undesirable bacterial fermentation.

    A well-controlled reduction can contribute to lower nitrogen excretion, more efficient nutrient use and, in some cases, lower feed costs — particularly when expensive protein raw materials can be partially replaced by targeted amino acid supplementation.

     

    The amino acid challenge

    This is where the real challenge lies. It's not total crude protein content that determines animal performance, but the availability of each individual essential amino acid.

    In practice, diets are often formulated with a certain safety margin — higher crude protein levels act as a buffer to ensure all essential amino acids are sufficiently available for metabolism.

    When crude protein is reduced, every essential amino acid — lysine, methionine, threonine, tryptophan, valine, isoleucine — needs to be tracked precisely. This is why the ideal protein concept is applied, with lysine as the reference amino acid. Importantly, this is always calculated using digestible amino acids, not crude values. What the animal actually absorbs is what determines performance.

    What are the limits?

    • Finisher pigs (25–115 kg): crude protein can often be safely reduced when all limiting amino acids are correctly supplemented and the actual nutritional value of the raw materials used is sufficiently accounted for.
    • Sows (gestation/lactation): more caution is needed. Their amino acid requirements are considerably higher, and deficiencies can lead to lower weaning weights, reduced piglet growth and weaker technical performance in the sow.

     

    • Piglets (up to 25 kg): protein reduction is now well established in Western Europe. A lower supply of excess protein in the digestive tract can reduce the risk of undesirable bacterial fermentation, with a positive effect on gut health. In other regions, this strategy is still applied less consistently.

     

    Practical points to watch

    1. Accurate amino acid supplementation. Free amino acids need to be dosed precisely. The nutritional value of commercial products can vary depending on source, manufacturing process and specifications — an incorrect matrix value can directly lead to deficiencies at animal level.

    2. Monitoring the energy-to-protein ratio. When crude protein decreases, the ratio between energy and protein often shifts as well. Without an adjusted formulation, this can result in unwanted fat deposition.

    3. Supporting gut health. Organic acids, prebiotics or functional fibre sources can contribute to a stable gut flora.

    4. Consistent raw material quality. As crude protein content decreases further, the safety margin narrows. Variations in the protein and amino acid content of raw materials such as soybean meal and cereals then have a greater impact on the final result.

     

    Crude protein reduction in pig diets offers real economic and ecological opportunities. Successful application requires a precise balance between amino acid supply, energy input, raw material quality and gut health. There is no universal limit — but thoughtful formulation is essential.
