Applying directly or via a recruiter: what is the difference?

When looking for a job, there are several ways to find one: you can browse job boards, contact your dream employer directly or work with a recruiter. But what is the best approach?

There are different ways to search for a job. Sometimes it is better to apply directly, sometimes through a recruiter. Here are the pros and cons.

Applying directly

Seen a job opening you like? Go for it! Check if the vacancy is still open and put your best foot forward. But do not be surprised if it takes time to get a response.

If there is no vacancy, it becomes harder. Knowing someone inside the company helps. Some companies work with recruitment partners and do not review applications themselves.

Sending your CV to many companies is not appreciated and can hurt your chances.

Applying directly?

  • Be targeted
  • Apply to open vacancies
  • Know a contact person
  • Downsides: longer response time and sometimes not possible

Applying via a recruiter

Want to increase your chances? Work with a recruiter. They are experts in the hiring process.

They often have access to hidden vacancies and can open doors for you. You can also suggest vacancies to them.

At Select, people come first. We match your profile with the right job and company.

Why use a recruiter?

  • Access to hidden jobs

  • CV optimisation

  • Personalised advice

  • Faster feedback

  • Jobs tailored to your profile
